Every baby or child needs to wind down before bed, so that they don’t go to bed excitable or upset. It’s possible for babies to sleep too much — and it’s definitely not recommended early in infancy. Remember, at 1 month of age your baby should feed at least eight to 12 times in the span of 24 hours, so letting a newborn sleep "all day" or more than the upper limit of 17 hours can mean she’ll miss out on the nutrition she needs. Ideally, your baby should sleep in your room with you, but alone in a crib, bassinet or other structure designed for infants, for at least six months, and, if possible, up to one year. This might help decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). You may think your baby never sleeps, but in reality, most newborns sleep up to 18 hours a day, they just do it in two-to-four-hour bursts.

Baby Sleep Requirements

If you have a partner, share the burden. If you are breastfeeding, this may mean asking your partner to do the early morning changing and dressing so that you can go back to sleep. When babies get to 6 months, as you lay them down in their cot, put down a soft toy they like next to them, or a blanket or muslin that smells of you (and them). This really helps some babies to settle. Some babies are bothered by wet nappies at night, most are not. If your baby sleeps through wet nappies, there is no need to awaken her for a change. However, if you’re treating a persistent nappy rash, continue to change them. While you don’t need a baby monitor for safety reasons, some parents feel it can help with creating good sleep habits. If you have one with a video monitor, you can check the screen instead of entering their room after every movement and teeny yelp, and, ideally, watch your baby swiftly and safely resettle on their own without you worrying or intervening. 8-11 weeks old is a great age to gently introduce healthy sleep habits. Sometimes, all you have to do is change around your routine or add in a small sleep prop, and baby starts sleeping better right away. It can be common to use a second-hand mattress for baby either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress brought in from outside of the family home, although the link is not yet proven. Conditioning Baby To Fall Asleep

Babies and children have very different sleep needs and patterns than grown-ups do. Most parents will encounter a sleep-related problem at some point – whether it’s coping with the sleep-deprivation of life with a newborn, or handling night terrors or bedwetting in older children. Too-tight pajamas, a strand of hair wrapped around a toe (it happens!), a leaky nappy - there are all sorts of things that can cause baby discomfort throughout the night. And some babies are more sensitive than others. Check baby for potential irritants, like hair or a rough snap on their sleeper, before bedtime. Babies should be in a separate bed or crib appropriate for infants. This sleeping arrangement is recommended ideally for the baby's first year. But it should at least be maintained for the first 6 months. Your baby needs about eleven to twelve hours of nighttime sleep, so if they are consistently starting their day between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m., they need a bedtime about twelve hours before then. The safest place for your baby to sleep for the first six months is in a cot in the same room as you. Always put your baby down to sleep on their back with their feet at the bottom of their cot or Moses basket. Keep blankets and sheets away from their face. Tuck covers securely under their armpits or consider using a ‘baby sleeping bag’. Teaching your baby to sleep can be stressful for many new parents – long days of cleaning blowouts, listening to inconsolable cries, and keeping up with insatiable hunger followed by interrupted nights takes its toll on the whole family. You could try rocking your baby or walking around with them. If this doesn’t work you may want to try taking them out in the pram or out in the car to help her get to sleep. The motion will usually help your baby drift off and can be a great technique especially to help your baby nap during the daytime. Babies’ sleep can be affected by daylight and their body temperature. Time spent in daylight, especially in the afternoons, seems to help babies to sleep for longer at night. When your baby gets to about six weeks, you can encourage them to drop off without relying on you to feed or rock them to sleep. Try putting them on their back when they’re looking sleepy, and let them slowly drift off. Learning this skill will help them get back to sleep without you. Keep pillows, sheets, blankets away from your baby or any other items that could obstruct your baby’s breathing or cause them to overheat. A high proportion of infants who die as a result of SIDS are found with their head covered by loose bedding. Try To Sleep When Your Baby Sleeps

Some babies can’t fight sleep – their need for shut-eye overrides their desire to play and cuddle. Lucky parents. The back is the only safe position for sleep, but it’s the worst position for stopping a baby’s fussies. It makes babies feel insecure, like they’re falling.
