According to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), 2011 saw increases in business-travel spending and trip volume. With data still coming in, GBTA predicts that 2012 will see business-travel spending rise nearly 5 percent.

"Although the economic reduction is still modest, we see business travel remaining healthy and booming at a steady rate that outpaces GDP growth," Michael McCormick, GBTA administrative director and COO, said in a statement.

One factor contributing to the rise in business travel is the rapid spread of mobile communications technology. As people find better ways of staying in touch with the home office -- ways that reach beyond traditional voice-to-voice contact via mobile phones, it is easier for them to take extended and more frequent trips abroad.
